Nicole Kidman left the Venice Film Festival suddenly after her mother passed away. She was there for her new movie, Babygirl, where she won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.
The movie’s director, Halina Reijn, accepted the award for Kidman. She shared that Kidman had to fly home after hearing the sad news about her mother.
In a statement read by Reijn, Kidman said she found out about her mom’s death shortly after arriving in Venice. She said, “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family.”
Kidman dedicated the award to her mother, saying, “This award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me.” She also shared, “My heart is broken.” The audience was shocked by the sad news.
In 2022, Kidman had talked about her mother’s health struggles. She was staying in Australia at the time to help care for her.
Kidman was very close to her mom. She once said her mother helped her *“see the world through an 81-year-old woman’s eyes.”* She praised her mom’s sharp mind and honesty.
Kidman’s mother was 83 when she passed away. She had often joined her daughter on red carpets over the years. Kidman’s father, a psychologist, died in 2014.
In Babygirl, Kidman plays a CEO who has an affair with a young intern. The film got great reviews at Venice and received a seven-minute standing ovation.
Our hearts go out to Nicole Kidman during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Janelle Ann Kidman.
