Nurse Gives Woman the Wrong Baby— Story of the Day

Before we were discharged from the hospital, the nurse took my twins for their last check-up. When she came back, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Instead of bringing back a boy and a girl, as I had given birth to, she returned with two baby girls. My heart dropped, and I was filled with confusion and fear. This was not the outcome I had been expecting.

Ross and I had struggled for a long time to have a family, so when we found out we were expecting twins, a boy and a girl, we were overjoyed. But after the first check-up, things took an unexpected turn. The nurse, Savannah, brought us two girls instead of one of each. My heart sank as I questioned her, asking, “Where’s my son? What happened to him? And whose baby is this other girl?”

Savannah calmly told me, “These are your daughters, ma’am. I checked the reports, and there’s no mistake.” I couldn’t believe what she was saying. “I have proof that I was supposed to deliver a boy and a girl,” I said, feeling panic rise in me. “There’s no way they’re both girls!” Savannah didn’t answer, but she looked uneasy. At that moment, Dr. Carter walked in and tried to calm the situation, telling me, “Please keep it down. There are other patients here.”

I was too upset to be quiet. “Your nurse brings me a random child and says she’s mine, and you want me to be quiet?” I asked, my voice rising. “Is this how your hospital operates? Should I call the chief doctor?” Ross stepped in, agreeing with me. “We don’t want to cause a scene, but if we don’t get our son back, we’ll have to call the police.” Dr. Carter assured us that it was just a misunderstanding and that Savannah had worked at the hospital for years. She asked Savannah to show her the documents.

Savannah hesitated but handed over the papers. Dr. Carter checked them carefully and realized that there had been a mix-up. “There was another patient named Mrs. Matthews, with the same first name,” she explained. “Savannah must have confused the two.” Although I was relieved, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated. “I’m glad you found the mistake,” I said coldly. “But I hope next time, your staff is more careful.”

Dr. Carter apologized and asked Savannah to follow her so they could fix the problem. I felt uneasy, so I quietly followed them. Outside Dr. Carter’s office, I overheard their conversation. Savannah explained between sobs that her sister’s baby girl had no one to care for her after her mother passed away. She had wanted to adopt the baby, but her husband disagreed. In her desperation, she had swapped our son with her niece, thinking we would give the girl a loving home.

Dr. Carter firmly told Savannah that what she did was wrong. “This is a serious mistake, Savannah. You need to bring the Matthews’ son back right away.” Though I was upset, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Savannah. She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone, but her actions were driven by a deep need to honor her sister’s dying wish. As I returned to my room, I couldn’t shake the thought of the little girl left without a family.

Later, Dr. Carter returned with my son and apologized for the confusion. I was relieved, but my heart was still heavy for the little girl. I couldn’t stop thinking about her, so the next day, I turned to Ross and said, “I want to adopt her. I can’t bear the thought of her growing up alone.” Ross was hesitant at first, but when he held the baby, his heart softened. “Okay, let’s adopt her,” he agreed.

After some time, we started the adoption process, and we named the little girl Amelia. Our family, once just a family of three, was now complete. We couldn’t have been happier with our decision. Savannah was grateful and became a close friend. She often visited, spending time with Amelia and our twins, Sia and Mark. Our family felt whole, and we were thankful to have embraced Amelia into our lives.
